Tchaikovsky – The Nutcracker – Mariinsky Theatre Gergiev

The Nutcracker based on the original choreography by Marius Petipa, with current choreography by Vasily Vainonen, and of course the wonderful music of Tchaikovsky (with apologies to all the ballerinas who have listened to it so many times!), conducted by Valery Gerviev and presented in the Mariinsky Theatre.

Personally, I’m more familiar with the New York City Ballet’s 1993 production of George Balanchine’s Nutcracker, so when I watch this one, I’m not sure who’s who. Also, it seems that for many numbers the tempos are slow. But, considering the source of this production, it may be that they have it right, and it’s the rest of us who are out to lunch.

For those of you who struggle with mixed feelings through the Christmas season, may I recommend this wonderful production to you. Even just watch some of it! My best wishes to all for a Merry Christmas!
